My 5-month Natural Hair Journey

Hello everyone,

On October 29, 2010, I went 100% Natural and did the BIG Chop. Prior to Oct 29, I haven’t had a perm for six months. I remember this day as if it was yesterday. It was a windy Friday and I had to go to the social security office for my granny. Later that night, I attended my son’s school annually Fall Fest. Before leaving the house, I took my corn rolls out and wore a braid out. While driving, I kept looking in the mirror and was not happy at what I saw. I kept thinking it is going to be hard to manage my hair during the transition phase. For me, the natural and perm hair were not a good mix.

When I got home, I called my friend and asked if she had hair scissors. Now, I already had some myself, but I just did not want to cut my hair alone. I told my husband that I would be back. I arrived at my friend’s house and we began to talk. The next thing I knew I was in her bathroom with the scissors in my hand. I called out to her and said, “COME HERE.” I told her that I was going to do it, she said, “Do what?” I am going to cut my hair. I then pulled a piece of my hair from the top and just clipped it right off. My friend was SHOCKED and AMAZED! I said, “Oh well, no going back now,” so I continued to cut my hair. I had my friend to cut the back, as I could not see. All said and done, I looked in the mirror and said I have a tiny Afro, LOL. My friend told me she liked it and it fit me well.

After cleaning my hair up, we went back to the living room and talked about what just happened among other things. I then went home to show off my new cut to my family. Later that night, while waiting for my son to enter the haunted house, I left him and hubby to go to the mall. I went to Carol’s Daughter to get some hair products. I love the Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie. The sale associate at Carol’s Daughter was very helpful and provided informative information. I had a perm prior to 13 years old, so talking to someone with a clue was indeed helpful.

In the past five months, I experimented with different products and hair styles. In addition, I visit YouTube, Nappturality and other sites. I also connect with friends and associates who have Natural hair.

Nowadays, I wear TWA (teeny weeny Afro), twists, twists out, braids, and braid outs. For my twists and twist outs, I love to use Lock &Twist Gel by Organic Root Stimulator and African Natural Shea Butter. To add some class, I wear hair accessories.

I’m enjoying my Natural hair and I look forward to the next five months!

Thank you,
Angela
